You may have noticed that in each person's mini-profile (the area to the left of their posts) there is this: Karma: # Exalt Smite
The biggest thing to keep in mind when it comes to the Karma system is this: If you are taking the Karma system seriously, you are taking it too seriously.
This is a built-in Proboards feature; on other forums, this system is more often known as Reputation, but Proboards decided to name it Karma instead.
Exalt: Clicking on this link in another member's mini-profile will add a point to their Karma. Common reasons to do this include a useful post, friendly nature or good advocacy work. No need to be stingy here, they're free.
Smite: Clicking on this link will remove a point from that person's Karma. Reasons to smite someone are generally reserved for posting offensive, false or inaccurate information (lying, basically) or for being mean. Please try to keep the smiting to a minimum.
One other thing to keep in mind when giving or taking away Karma is that the system is confidential. This can be good for avoiding problems (if someone is taking the Karma system seriously) but at the same time results in situations where the receiver has no idea why they were Exalted or Smited.
As a real-life example, in the last week someone Exalted me, giving life to an innocent little point that sat there twiddling its thumbs all dumb and happy. And in the last 24 hours, someone Smited me, thereby stealing away my one, lonely Karma point and sending it off into whatever empty oblivion such points go to when they die. I have no idea why either of these were done.
This results in a situation where the person who was Exalted or Smited has no way to know to keep up the good work or address the disagreement or problem. There is no learning opportunity.
So, if you're going to give or especially if you're going to take away Karma, a good rule of thumb is to let the person know why. This can be done either publically by responding to their post or privately through PM in thanks or disagreement. You don't necessarily even have to say that you have affected their Karma directly, the post or PM alone should give them a clue.
In the end though, Karma is much like the points in the original Super Mario Bro's game. They don't really do anything, but the game wouldn't have been nearly as much fun without them.

WoW, I am impressed here, for the negative attention. I have been smitted 5 times during the past 24 hours!!!! You Really deserve a little pat on the back for that one.
If it continues at this rate, I will achieve a record of being the most smitted in the shortestperiod of time!

Weird, I must say, since you just started a new incarnation, maybe your karma is based upon the number of syllables in your screen name, or did your karma run over your dogma.

Terry: difficult to beat your unique quote here, I would rather someone is smitten instead of being smitted lol. Ooooops, here we go again, another smite !
Definitely achieved a record here of being most smitted - 6 times in 24 hours......

Thanks to some of you for your emails and to others, please, do not, give me any Ks..... they will be smitted, moreover, there is no need to respond and feed the desire to create dissent, suspicion and chaos here on this forum.

Smitting frenzy has started again!!! I am going to be reincarnated as a fly, unless, the powers that be, interferes, so that I can keep my present incarnation.
Oh well, boring pathological behaviour being exhibited... yawn, yawn...

Hey Beebs,
I sent a PM to the person who has been smiting you days ago, but apparently they're too busy coming here just to smite you to check their PM's. So, since I can't do it privately apparently, here's a message for them:
To the person who's been smiting Beebo: Check your PM's! If I don't get a response from you the next time you log in, I'm going to ban you! This site is about supporting each other and making friends, not just sniping at people repeatedly with no explanation given. Besides, ignoring the admin is bad form.
I hope in the future when members have problems with another member or their posts, they will take the time to discuss this openly so the problem can be resolved. Karma is meant to be a fun system whereby we can give each other pats on the back; smiting someone once or twice is one thing, using the site for nothing but that is just silly and a waste of everyone's time.
Just think, in a million years, none of this will matter.

Sometime after posting the explanation of Karma above, I was nosing around through the admin section of the site and clicked on something called "Security Log." In there, it shows some of the activity that has gone on on the site, like people modifying their posts and whatnot; this is mostly there for administrators to be able to keep tabs on the actions of moderators on the site, to make sure that they aren't secretly abusing their powers or anything. It also contains the activity relating to the Karma system, who exalted/smited whom and when.
I don't normally check this log, mostly because there's no one here to keep tabs on, but also because I prefer the Karma system to remain anonymous, so I didn't feel any pressing need to write up something like this. But after Beebs alerted me to what was happening, I took a peek, found out who it was and wrote them a PM, asking them why they were doing this and offering to work on a solution to whatever the problem was.
Sadly, this person decided to lie to me (even after I told them about this log), saying that they "Only smited Beebs a couple of times," "Don't have time for games," and "Barely log on here." The security log clearly shows that they smited Beebs once an hour, multiples hours a day for many days. 17 times in total.
Please folks, whatever you do, just don't lie to me or the other members here. Like that person said, I don't have time for games. Got a problem with the site, another member, or even myself? Just let me know and we'll talk it out; we're all adults here. Disagreements are inevitable, even cool sometimes because they provide learning and growth opportunities, but childish games and blatant dishonesty are things that just don't serve any real purpose and won't be tolerated here.
Besides, if you're taking the Karma points seriously, you're taking them too seriously.
Just think, in a million years, none of this will matter.

Hi Multifloxed2x,
I just wanted to let you know that you haven't been smited. The words "Exalt" and "Smite" are at the bottom of everyone's mini-profile at all times; if you'd been smited the number next to "Karma:" would be -1, as everyone starts out with 0.
Sorry for the confusion. I have considered eliminating smiting altogether on here in the past, but the system has been self-correcting over time and, barring the unfortunate incident with Beebs above, extremely positive overall.
I would like to hear other peoples' thoughts on this though. If a lot of people would like me to remove the Smite option, I will do so (I can't guarantee that it's possible due to potential coding conflicts, but it most likely would be easy for me to do).

I personally don't want to hear anyone's judgement of me, unless they have the integrity to give it to me personally with a PM. This is not junior high school. Get over it or Get a life. Work to be done here. I personally don't have time or energy to indulge such activity.
Just think, in a million years, none of this will matter.

Hey, just doing my job

You do a wonderful job managing all this
Well, I try, but I wouldn't say "Wonderful." Some days it's all I can do to read some posts and then go find something that doesn't require me using my brain and/or body for awhile. "Floxed" and "Admin" don't always go together all that well, but I hope everyone just understands that. We're all here for support and understanding.

thanks for the patience and tolerance as I get acclimated to this site.
Patience is something that Levaquin has taught me in abundance. Once you've had to wait an hour until your legs stop burning just so you can stand up and go get yourself a drink of water, I think you can wait for anything.

Thanks for catching the post about breast on the wrong thread, I caught that after but didn't know how to move it or take it off.
Members can't move threads or posts, but do have the ability to remove their posts. Just look for this button in the upper-right hand corner of your posts: . I do ask that this not be done if there are any replies though, because that can ruin the thread.
And if you ever have any questions or need help with anything, please don't hesitate to ask.
